The public service communications manual is an excellent place to start
with Amateur Radio Public Service. It describes in detail the who's, what's,
when's and how's for public service communications! This is a must read for
anyone who wants to work public service events or be involved with disaster
preparedness.

We provide the exclusive communication for this 9, 20, 33 and 62.5-mile bike loops. This event will draw over 5000 entries and utilize 35 Hams to provide communication. The ARES Operations Center will typically use three Repeaters to cover the courses, providing operation, tactical, health, welfare and safety support. An additional simplex frequency is used for start/finish coordination and VIP communication. APRS is also utilized to provide real time location of support vehicles on the bike loops.
Tour De Cure
We provide the exclusive communications for this 100 + mile bike loop.
This event will draw over 2000 entries and utilize over 30 hams to provide
communications. Amateur radio provides the sole means of communication
for this event which spans four western New York counties.
American Diabetes Walk (ADA)
Held in mid-September, this 3.5 mile walk in the city of Buffalo out of Dunn
Tire Park benefits the American Diabetes Association and will draw 1000+
people. ARES provides the comunications for this event utilizing 12-14 hams on
a single simplex frequency.
Pumpkin Patrol
Erie County ARES works with the New York State Police to help provide
detection and reporting of people throwing objects over bridge overpasses on
Halloween. Significant damage can be caused from objects hitting a vehicle
moving at 55-65 mph. Amateur radio operators will watch specified bridge
overpasses and report any suspicious activity to the New York State Police.
